For 15 years, in four countries, my job has had the same shape: something needs to be stood up, joined together, or moved — and someone has to make it work. Australia, then France, then upstate New York, then Canada, now California. Electronics, rail manufacturing, then vaccines, now biologics. Along the way: a €10M electronics portfolio delivered into a 48-hour installation window in Shanghai; a vaccine shortage across Northern Europe averted in two weeks; a new-product launch that landed 20% above baseline; and an entire supply chain operation transferred from Ottawa to Brampton — where I set up the new team, three staff and nine contractors, and kept them. Different countries, different industries, same problem underneath. At Roche I took that into global sourcing: direct-material supply and capacity planning across the Drug Substance and Drug Product network, $700M+ in spend, 10,000+ materials. $34M+ in savings over 15+ global initiatives, a redesigned risk-mitigation inventory policy, and 50+ critical single-use materials dual-sourced in time to hold every US site at full production through COVID with zero stockouts. Now I'm Business Operations Manager for Site Operations at Genentech's Oceanside Drug Substance site — nine departments, around a hundred people, maintenance and utilities through to scheduling, warehouse and procurement. When Facilities & Engineering and Materials Management merged in 2024, the org chart existed but the function didn't. I designed what makes it one: the operating model, the cadence, the escalation paths, the KPI framework, the goal-setting cycle. None of it through direct reports; all of it through the nine managers who have them. The part I didn't expect is how much of this turned out to be software. Rather than wait in an IT queue, I build what the function needs — a work-order cockpit over SAP work-management data, an MRO analyzer that tells procurement which parts to chase, a tech-transfer BOM engine for MSAT, bots that write back into SAP scheduling, dashboards pulled straight from SAP OData, Snowflake and SAP Analytics Cloud. AI is the coding partner; the design, the testing and the ownership are mine. Overdue compliance is down 82%, overdue work orders down about 52% in six months, and 2,000+ hours a year have gone back to the people doing the actual work.
